We invite you to the play “The Tiger Hunters” staged by the Kiev theater “Golden Gate”. This is a bold reinterpretation of Ivan Bahrianyi's famous novel, where the taiga, escape, danger, love, and the desire for freedom are revealed through words, music, voices, and movements. This must be seen!
Another hit of the “Golden Gate” theater
The plot of the novel “The Tiger Hunters” is well known from the school curriculum. Engineer-aviator Hryhoriy Mnohohrishny flees from the “death train” in the Far East, where he is sheltered by the family of Ukrainian settlers Sirky. They live by the strict laws of the taiga, hunt tigers, and maintain their own way of life far from their homeland. For Hryhoriy, this becomes a chance to start over, but the Soviet punitive machine continues to pursue him even here.
Director and dramatization author Pavlo Shpegun created a play in which Ukrainian legend meets the traditions of Japanese theater, and a familiar story takes on mystical and almost ritualistic sound.
Unusual “The Tiger Hunters”
In Pavlo Shpegun's staging, the story is told by a mysterious girl wearing a Japanese Noh theater mask. She appears from nowhere and gradually immerses the audience into Mnohohrishny's world. But her narrative is unusual: she does not speak everything aloud. Part of the story is conveyed through music, voices, movement, and symbolic images. Thus, a fantastic space is created where reality borders on the mystical world.
A special place in the play is occupied by music. Here it not only accompanies the stage action but actually becomes part of it and helps tell the story. Ukrainian folk songs intertwine with the sounds of cello, jaw harp, harmonica, kalimba, sopilkas, violin, guitar, and djembe.
All these techniques help to feel everything that defines the “Tiger Hunters”: the dangerous and majestic taiga, the tension of escape, loneliness, the power of love, and thirst for freedom. This is a familiar story from a different angle – here words, voices, masks, and melodies form a whole theatrical narrative. Don’t miss the play “The Tiger Hunters” by the Kiev theater “Golden Gate”!
